Kārlis Kundrāts chiefly works as a conductor, but he is also a skilled vocal and instrumental performer. Member of early music vocal ensemble Ars Antiqua Riga and chamber choir Ave Sol. Performs with State Choir Latvija and the Latvian Radio Choir. Riga Operetta Theatre concertmaster and assistant conductor since 2015, Riga Chamber Orchestra conductor since 2016.

Kārlis has learned plenty about symphonic orchestra conducting in workshops with Daniele Gatti, Lutz Köhler, Rossen Milanov, Zsolt Nagy, and Mariss Jansons. He studied orchestra conducting at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with Paul Mägi in 2014. Participant of early music interpreting workshops with Erik Van Nevel, Jos van Veldhoven, and Jörg Weigle.

Kundrāts has collaborated with the Estonian Academy of Music SO, Jāzeps Mediņš Riga Music School No. 1 SO, Sinfonia concertante, and the joint orchestra of Riga music schools. Kundrāts is also the leader of several music school orchestras.

Kārlis’ first professional encounter with the LNSO was in the production of Wagner’s opera Götterdämmerung at the Latvian National Opera as a cor anglais player, and he made his conducting debut with the orchestra in March, 2016.

The young conductor graduated from the Riga Dome Choir School choral conducting class (teacher Sigvards Kļava). He received a master’s degree in symphonic orchestra conducting at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in 2015, class of Andris Vecumnieks. Kārlis has also studied oboe playing at the RDCS and JVLMA with pedagogues Vilnis Pelnēns, Kristīne Kupča, and Egils Upatnieks. Currently learning to play the trombone.
