The bells of the Cathedral of St Sophia in Novgorod were one of Serge Rachmaninov’s key childhood impressions and this can be heard in his oratorio Bells. The mighty and beautiful opus speaks to happy blue skies in the springtime, as well as a dark grey blanket of clouds. Alongside this composition, the audience will hear weighty depictions of the Soviet era from Dmitry Shostakovich and Yevgeny Yevtushenko, with reflections of the tragedy of World War II and scenes from the realities of life in the post-war era.
