The first part of the concert features rarities. Britten wrote his Violin Concerto at the age of 25. The lustrous opus has Spanish and Moorish echoes, but above all it is a wide-scale portrait of an era with references to the war in Spain, and to Europe’s anticipation of the Second World War. Before this piece, Rachmaninoff’s earliest surviving symphonic work will be performed – a charming scherzo, written during his study years. In the second part, a symphonic hit, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony – sealed by melancholy and fate, enfolded by capricious arabesques and the uncontrollable joy of a folk celebration.
