Rimsky-Korsakov was a perfectionist and preferred smoothly polished music. His friend Modest Mussorgsky, on the other hand, wrote splintery scores simply begging to be shaped with a block plane. However, a smooth Mussorgsky is not quite Mussorgsky anymore. The LNSO will provide a powerful experience by playing Mussorgsky’s St John’s Night on Bald Mountain, a version with Rimsky-Korsakov’s varnish removed. We will also hear Ravel’s brisk Piano Concerto (for both hands) with the sublimely exquisite Adagio assai; and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, a magnificent embodiment of an exile’s longing for his homeland.
