ImKa, short for Imants Kalniņš, describes his Symphony No. 5 as, “From ignorance to harmony”. Many simply call it a road. Musicologist Ligita Viduleja says, “From the subjective towards the objective, from the specific towards the general, from the generic towards the important”. The composition allows the listeners to deeply immerse themselves and, at the end, rewards them with the jubilant tune of the folk song I Went through a Silver Grove. The programme also includes a new piano concerto – written by a highly educated composer who can analyse even the most complicated patterns of polyphony, but whose own music remains as simple and light as a sunbeam.
