Plakidis’ Glance Back (1991) marks a boundary in our distinguished master’s oeuvre – a simple, stately self-reflection with manly restraint and deep sorrow. Taneyev’s John of Damascus is a perfect complement to the programme – an image of sacral trial and humane feeling. The lines from the piece are a good description of its atmosphere: “But while I sleep with the eternal sleep, my love lives on.” Strauss uses entirely different methods to build his voluminous and figurative work about the legendary La Manche hero – it plays as if it were a symphonic cartoon.
