Brahms’s Double Concerto is full of enthusiastic billows and beauty. He wrote it late in his life to reconcile himself with the dissolution of his friendship with Joseph Joachim for purely personal reasons. Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 is one of his early works. Mahler’s own description includes the joy of awakening in the nature, a parody of a funeral march (inspired by a 19th century drawing where animals bury a hunter), and a deeply wounded heart trying to reach paradise from hell. Mahler once forbade these notes to be shown to the public, but the milk had already been spilled.
