Verdi’s Requiem


VerdiRekviems_kvadrOn the 18th of May, the LNSO and the State Choir Latvia, conducted by Andris Poga, will perform Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. This concert is a part of the cultural programme of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the first note of this extremely significant event for Latvian musicians will sound at the Vidzeme Concert Hall Cēsis.

The Latvian representatives for the Cēsis performance will be Liene Kinča, currently performing in Antwerp, Freiburg and Bratislava, and the brilliant Latvian National Opera bass-baritone Rihards Mačanovskis. The mezzo-soprano part will be performed by the vocal star of St Petersburg, Olesya Petrova, but the tenor part, by a guest from Italy – Giorgio Berrugi, an experienced and outstanding singer of the Verdi repertoire.

The popular and legendary Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem is not so much a mirror of eternal light but rather an influential and dramatic opus that promotes non-sacred reflections that provide unforgettable moments of emotional experiences.

As we know, Verdi (as Berlioz, Brahms and Fauré) defined his worldview as that of an agnostic, or a person who believes that we cannot know the existence, or not, of God. In his letter to his publisher Ricordi, the composer said: “I am somewhat of an agnostic”. On the other hand, in a letter to his wife, Giuseppe Verdi said: “For some virtuous people, God is necessary. Others, who observe the highest moral norms, are happier if they don’t believe in anything.”

Here is what Giuseppina Strepponi herself says: “He is a gem amongst the most honourable of husbands, who has access to the most refined and noble of feelings. However, this oaf allows himself to be, if not quite an atheist, then very little of the religious, and this obstinacy sometimes makes me want to hit him. I can drive myself crazy talking about the miracles of heaven, the earth and sea, but that is just a waste of time. He laughs in my face and curtails my oratorical eruptions and divine enthusiasm by saying – you are so funny. Unfortunately, he says it with complete conviction.”

In order to answer the question of for whom does the agnostic Verdi ask for eternal peace, we suggest referring to the German music academic Benjamin Gunnar Korsch, who says that – not being an ardent supporter of the idea of light, Verdi, in his stormy eruption of anger Dies irae reminds us of the exceptionally great power that belongs to “dogmatic minds, institutionalized religion and political systems who dare to arrogantly decide on good or bad. The dilemma is that they need to use evil to reach the perceived good.”
