The festival opened with an evening performance of Carmen (conductor Normunds Šnē), a modern ballet production by choreographer Milana Komarova. Outstanding ballet artists danced to Rodion Shchedrin’s striking adaptation of Georges Bizet’s passionate score: Viktorija Jansone (Carmen), Kārlis Cīrulis (José), Alise Prudāne (Fate), Arturs Sokolovs (Escamillo), and chorus dancers. The enraptured audience cheered the new Carmen with lengthy ovation.
In addition, Krists Auznieks’ phantasmagoric, hypnotic new work Fire and Rose was performed in the first part of the concert by Sinfonietta Rīga and Normunds Šnē.
