INGA KALNA AND 7 ROMANCES – LNSO CHAMBER MUSIC
Thursday
19:00
Venue Lielā ģilde, Amatu iela, Central District, Riga, Latvia

An evening of rarities in the LNSO chamber music concert series. The programme has been put together by the LNSO Piano Trio, featuring LNSO violinist Indulis Cintiņš, LNSO cellist Dace Zālīte, and Mārtiņš Zilberts, principal vocal coach at the Latvian National Opera. The programme’s guest – singer Inga Kalna, renowned in prominent opera houses around the world.

The musicians say – the trio remains true to the idea of performing one of the great peaks of piano trio literature, and this time they have chosen Schubert’s grand Second Piano Trio – one of Schubert’s final compositions. This substantial, very beautiful trio, often quoted on film soundtracks, was dedicated to the engagement celebrations of a friend from the composer’s schooldays, and it is one of the rare works from Schubert’s final years that the composer himself got to hear performed in his lifetime.

Alongside Schubert – Latvian composer Jānis Ivanovs’ Piano Trio, which weaves together both a portrait of Jāzeps Vītols, the patriarch of Latvian music, and real life, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s vocal cycle set to poetry by Alexander Blok, in which one of the songs declares: “At night, when all that is troubled falls asleep and the city wraps itself in mist, oh, what music sounds from God, and what sounds are born on earth.”
